courbet at the met

We finally saw the Gustave Courbet show at the Met today and I'm so happy to have seen this huge retrospective of his work before the show closes next week. I especially liked his nudes that depicted women with body hair and skin marked by corsets — a level of realism that was highly shocking at the time. Accompanying these paintings were a selection of erotic 19th century photographs, which I found interesting, as that kind of photography was referenced in a novel that I just finished — it was set in the same Victorian time period and was called The Meaning of Night.
